Stored Functions Vs Stored Procedures

Hi All,

What are the scenarios in which stored function is preferred over stored procedure.I have seen in books and over net that function is used mostly for select kind of queries.Any specific reason for doing the same.

More specifically in reference to your question, a function returns a value. So it is more similar to a Java getter and is used for selects. What would you have your setter return?
