Type 3 driver

I have read that type 3 drivers are supported only by the application servers..

Is that true?

As you can see from the JavaRanch driver comparison, type 3 drivers are usually provided by the middleware vendor, not the database vendor.

When should i go for a type 3 driver...and I am using Jboss..so how do i configure the driver for the same?

What database are you using?

We typically use the driver from the database vendor (type 4) because it is faster. The database vendor is in the best position to optimize the driver for their database.

Not neccessarily. You can set up a datasource on the application server using and driver you want.
