I don't know much about data bases. I was thinking of learning the basics of OpenOffice Base to familiarise myself before learning about J2EE and JDBC etc. What do you think about this? thanks

I would say most of the part of J2EE is not really related to Database.
Only you need to know how to plug the database driver in configuration of your J2EE project.

So we can start learning Database and J2EE side by side.

Databases play an important role in enterprise applications, so you should definitely read up on relational databases and SQL. Whether learning OO Base will help with this, I'm not sure (is it SQL-accessible?) Once you master SQL, learning JDBC isn't hard, and what with EJB, Hibernate etc. it's becoming less important, since it's becoming more likely that you won't see pure JDBC, but rather some layer on top of it.
