not able to connect to mysql database

i am getting this error can any one tell why i am getting this error

java.sql.SQLException: Communication link failure: Bad handshake

Do you have the MySQL jdbc driver that matches your MySQL version?

Possible workaround:

The 4.1, changed the client authentication code . Start mysqld with
the --old-passwords option (or add old-passwords to the [mysqld]
section of my.cnf)
