Hi,

My company is offering the designation as senior software developer for 2 years experienced guys. Do you think it would be ok to accept that designation?

Usually for how many years of experience this designation is offered?

What is stopping you from accepting the designation, Its good that your company is offering such a designation at an early stage, since some of the companies take quite a long time for the change in designation though the performance of the employee is good enough. It is usually 3 years in our company.

Depends on your organization structure. For ex
If a company have the following structure: Associate Software Engineer -> Software Engineer -> Senior Software Engineer(SSE), it may take you more time to reach SSE.

Personally, I do not think I would be comfortable in considering myself a "Senior" Software Engineer in 2 yrs...but again thats my personal opinion...but I've heard that Indian s/w companies do offer these roles just to appease their employees without offering them an appropriate hike in pay....going by that way here in the US it is a better option...u can be a developer for 10 yrs and at the sametime get paid according to the skills you picked up and your experience....and to get into Project Mgmt you have to quip yourself with the appropriate skillsets (like CAPM / PMP certification) before you can apply for one...again thats how it works in the US - it might be totally different in India...

A promotion without its corresponding role change / pay change is just Management bull....IMHO

you are absolutely right. They just give these designations to please the employees. Do you think it would be rightious if the designation is rejected?

When they are giving you why you want to reject? Whatever Ganpi explained will best suits to US industry. When you are in India go with Indian situation. Your management might be confident that you can give help and guidance to your junior software engineers so they are promoting you. Just go ahead.

How it will affect? The new company gives you designation based on your current role, skills, experience and their policies. In software industry always you need to be ready to accept new roles and responsibilities.

IMO It does not make much diffrence when you change the company ,new company would give you the position according to your experience and skillset .
So don't see any problem to take this opportunity ,you can ask for pay hike as well if they give you more responsibility ,position alone would not make diffrence .
So go ahead..............
