Java DB Project

Hello Everyone.

I have a couple of questions and would like to hear your thoughts and get your feedback.

I am planning on developing a Java app that will act as a front end to a database and present the end user with various questions regarding the db contents. For example, the GUI front end should present a question like: "How do you interact with angry customers?". The user will have the option to select radio buttons such as: "Poor", "Average", "Good", "Excellent". Based upon the answer, the program will select a detailed answer (that is already in the db). Lastly, I would like to export the questions and answers to MS Word or an .RTF file or another editable document format.

Any help, input, or suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks.

Jenny

Welcome to JavaRanch.

What exactly is the part you need help with:
  • accessing the DB,
  • creating the GUI and user interaction, or
  • generating the report after its done?

  • What do you have so far, and where are you stuck?

    Thanks for the response.

So far I have test DB that contains one table with the following columns:

  • Question
  • Response
  • Answer

  • My java app is pretty bare bones, I can connect to the DB (which is MS Access) and read the contents without a problem. Building the GUI would be in the next phase (which I don't have a problem with), and then the report generation portion.

I would like to get some input on report generation. I checked out a couple of the third party libraries (iText, POI, OpenOfficeAPI etc...), but my desired result is export the Questions, Response, and Answer in an editable format and then send it to clients. Have you ever done that or do you have any advice regarding this topic?

Thank you in advance for you time.

In an editable format because you want to be able to update the data? (i.e. do you need to parse the edited content and persist it?)

I was thinking of having an editable format just in case minor issues such as tables, fonts, page borders need to be updated or modified. Also, I think I can simplify this solution by exporting the results to an HTML or web file.

    What do you think?

    Thanks.

In that case iText isn't a bad choice. It can generate RTF (which is editable using Word or OpenOffice), HTML (which is sort of editable if you know what you're doing), and PDF (if one day you decide that the result shouldn't be editable at all).
