Earn your spurs any way you can. Don't think you can be picky as an inexperienced person with no work experience and get a high profile job doing exactly what you want to do.
Maybe in 5 years, or more likely 10 years, you might be in a position where you can choose whom you want to work for and what you want to do there. For now, take what job you can get and get some code into your fingertips. Doesn't matter whether it's Cobol, PL/1, or Fortran, the experience will be a good learning school for how the real world works as compared to the nice theory you learned at school.

Dude..I think you need to understand that though mainframe is not the "hottest" of technologies compared to J2EE / .NET, trust me - most of the systems of big corporations still run on MainFrames. Mainframes is in no way a bad career option - in fact I would advise you not to have a prejudiced notion of mainframes at your start of your career. Later on (8-9 years from now) when you want to become a Technical lead / Architect, all-round experience from Mainframes to web systems would be very handy. And when you have enough experience in Mainframes, you could always branch out into something else like web, datawarehousing etc. to diversify your technical knowledge. So take a hard look and decide for yourself - do not get influenced by someone elses' opinion about Mainframes.
