As a very beginning, the (free) developer's guide that is bundled with the j2sdkee1.2.1 is very good. It's available online here: http://java.sun.com/j2ee/j2sdkee/devguide1_2_1.pdf

Also a good book, but unfortunately a few version behind, is Ed Roman's Mastering EJB. The entire book is available online (free) at: http://www.theserverside.com/resources/book.jsp As you can see, it requires you to sign in to theserverside.com, but this site is excellent, so it's worth the time.

Also available is preview public review postings of the new edition of this book. http://www.TheServerSide.com/resources/ejb_review.jsp

Don't get me started about those stupid light bulbs.
