Is it true that in practice, the J2EE Web server and the App server tiers are usually installed on the same machine?

Its common this happen because u avoid remote calls to methods(they use the same VM) and have a better performance(at least in WebLogic).

We have Iplanet web server running some cgi perl scripts, html and some applets. We are planning to implement EJBs and hence install weblogic server. But we would like to keep the web server running as it is? can we run both iplanet web server and the weblogic server on the same machine? If so, how it works?
Thanks in advance!!

Don't get me started about those stupid light bulbs.
