If it is illegal to use the synchronized keyword inside the bean class, does that mean that it is also illegal to use Hashtables inside beans?

No. All of the restrictions on the EJB programming model only apply to the EJB classes themselves, not the classes that they use. Feel free to use Hashtables and Vectors

Does it also mean that I can use helper classes that spawn their own threads?
