Hi Guys,

I need to take decision about my Job.

I am getting an offer from Wipro USA with around 90K for an architect position and getting an offer from NY based company called Sterling Testing with a better package.
Which company to choose.

So the pros and cons are

1. In Wipro I wll be working as an Architect and may get placed in CA which I do prefer.
2. They start GC after an year, which I am not agree.
3. Package is ok ok.
4. Being an Indian I have a passion for Wipro.
5. Its a big banner.

The other company.

1. May work as a Sr. Engineer.
2. Need to travel from NJ to NY which is a pain.
3. Package is better then Wipro.
4. GC starts after 3 months.
5. I don't know much about this company(Sterling Testing).

What do you people say?

Doesn't Wipro seem better?
-location in CA, good weather year round
-less travel
-more senior position
-better brand value

As for the GC, it doesn't matter if it starts right now or after a year. Even if you clear the first two stages, you can't get to the third stage till the priority dates for your category become current. Right now for EB2 it is July 2002 and for EB1 it is Jan 2001 (approx). The backlog is 3-4 years so don't base your decision on when the GC process starts.

Let me caution though, CA is an expensive place to stay. If you plan to purchase a house etc, even an income of 90k isn't sufficient. You need to carefully think about what your priorities are.

You could still negotiate the salary by telling them that you have a competing offer!

All the best,
Amit

No Plan to purchase home in CA.
Neither I have money nor the position allows me. As I may need to move once the project gets over.

For costly point of view CA and NY no diff. Even NY is more costilar then CA.

For GC point of view you are right but then it works at per priority dates.

Yes the weather is one factor to consider.

The last point is perfectly correct I can speak for the package but Wipro has a very very strict HR policies. I don't know whether they will listen on it.

always assume that any promises made for some indeterminate point in the future are not made at all.
So if they say that you may be moved to a more senior position after a while, ignore that as it's not going to happen (there will be others in the company who get priority because they've been there longer for example, or the position may not exist).

Look for a job that is long term and stable .
Wipro keep u moving one place to another and who knows how many months they are going to pay u 90k salary .
If other job is stable (not consulting ) its better to go for that .
Second don't worry about Brand name if u have long term plan in US ,Wipro is not a good choice for longterm more over you can expereince American work culture out of Wipro otherwise I have seen guys from Wipro ,Polaris ,iflex etc working on holidays ,late hours ..i mean in Desi style .

Joshi,

Long working hours is not a problem. But the question is if I go with full time what about Job Security. Does any body knows about Sterling Testing in NY and the problem is from moving to NY to NJ.

I commute daily from NJ to NY .Commuters uses train not car , and if u r i n india u will find easy here . Its not problem , u have to choose ur home at commutable distance ,daily more then 50000 ppl commute to NY from NJ .
Full time job is good for intial years at least when u need regular income ,on time .once u settle u can decide your self what is good for u .

Let's rephrase it to - This is something that some/many people want. I know many people including myself who do not want to settle in US permanently!

From career point of view, Wipro Architect sounds much better than Sr.Engr at Sterling Testing. I would not worry too much about the package, unless it is 10% or more difference.

Yes the package difference is more then 10%.

Moreover I also don't wanna settle in US but when I stay here for 6 years nothing wrong for applying for GC and getting it done.
