West Bengal being a cheaper state, you won't find many companies which will pay you upto 'market' level.TCG I heard is a descent paymaster.Congizant has also presence there. Here is a list of Kolkatabased IT companies. Many of them are Indian companies. So if you are looking for onsite after sometime,Kolkata may not be a right option.
I think it would not be ideal to compare with Pune. The difference will be less and sometimes sal in Kolkata might be more.Ideally, compared to Bangalore or Mumbai it is very poor. Also the Cost of Living is less in Kolkata, though prices are going up.
I think it will be better in US. Btw, how much u are getting in US?

Currently, I am getting 78K USD PA in USA. I know , I will be getting much less than that in India , but I have decided to come down nonetheless due to personal reasons.
So it is something like Pune , salary wise ? I have heard that in Kolkata they are building some new Tech City to invite more companies ?? Any idea?
well, after 3-4 years it will be as per as banglore/pune.
I have heard this kind statement so many times for last 3-4 yrs, that I get a feeling that I am listening we shall overcome someday song, which we used to sing in school. Wipro was scouting for land in Newtown few years back for their 2nd campus in Kolkata and largest campus in India, but now I have heard that they have even dropped the idea of purchasing land. It will just take another complete shutdown (Bharat/Bongo Bandh) which may happen in next fuel hike, for Murthy to drop the idea of development centre like hot brick. Kolkata cost of living is less but not in all places. Especially the place Salt Lake where the IT companies are located is as costly.

You can not expect some dramatic changes overnight. If you see the track records of IT companies in Kolkata, the number will tell you the difference between the year 2002 and 2006. The present Chief Minister is trying his best. The perception about kolkata is changing slowly but steadily. Let us be optimistic

IBM CTS Wipro PWC TCS TCG Eforce(Not big company but will pay decent salary) NIIT PWC RS Software Skytech(Again its TCG group)
How is PwC ? iN terms of work Culture/ salary/ growth opportunities. I am having a discussion with them for job opportunity.
Any inputs about it are welcome. Also if someone can map the Levels with approx no of yrs of exp that will be helpful. I have close to 8 years of exp and want to understand what level should i expect [ June 21, 2006: Message edited by: Sachin Mehra ]
now in india all tier-1 cities (delhi, pune, mumbai, calcutta, bangalore, hyderabad, chennai) are the destinations for most of the IT companies. and the cost of living differs from city to city. i think bangalore is in number one position for better living conditions. i think culcutta is not much focussed in the picture. salary wise, it depends on the company and our demand as per our experience and skills.
