Over-generalizations like these are not helpful. Some companies will treat H!B workers the same as everyone else, some will treat them differently; it really depends on the company.

Maybe you heard this, but it's incorrect. H1B workers need to be paid prevailing wages, which -since we're talking about software development here- is way higher than that just about anywhere in the US. The amount of tax you're paying (I assume you're talking about income tax) is specified in the tax code, and you can get a first approximation here. Up to $74K you'd be in the 25% tax bracket.
