Why can't we have whatever forum name we want? I want to use the name "Lordly Caliber". But when I made a post I had thousands of forum police coming after me for not using a regular name.

Wanting to use it is OK, actually using it is not. We strongly believe that using real names contributes to a more professional community.

Mike -- here is a description of the policy, along with a little bit of the "why". We want people to use real names because we're real Java professionals, and we want to recognize the other people we talk to as real Java professionals too. Someone with a silly or obviously fake display name doesn't seem very professional -- they seem like they're trying to hide or something. We want everyone here to get the respect they deserve, so we ask them to treat themselves with respect by putting their best foot forward in this way.

You can also find the official Naming Policy discussion thread over here.
