Using JMS in distributed systems

Hi all,
I was just wondering how JMS works in distributed systems. Assuming we have multiple different hosts. Does each of these hosts need to run its own J2EE server? How would a client in one of these hosts send a message to another client's queue on another host?
Thanks,
Payam.
