EJB Container: is the environment in which EJBs are executed.
Application Server: usually contains a Web Server, EJB Container, Web Container + a few other things...
Usually a J2EE Application Server has a EJB container also. So we could write, deploy and execute EJBs.
I suggest you pick up a good book on EJBs and it would give you more information...
