Non-platform dependent DQL implementation

JBoss has useful DQL functionality, where JMS messages which exceded their retry threshhold are dropped onto a DQL. Does anyone know if this can be implemented in an app server independent way? I can't seem them mentioned in the J2EE spec, so I presume this is proprietory to the JMS provider. If so can anyone recommend a good (pref. opensource) implementation? Or any ideas how it can be replicated using the avaliable standards? Thanks.
