Typically load balancing is performed with either dedicated load balancing hardware (costs $$$) or separate servers running a software load balancer (cheaper, less robust/reliable).

Thanks both.
Would have missed Chris' article if it weren't for that link. I'd think it's still worth learning EJBs as it's perhaps the only chance to consider everything transaction-network related at one go. I'm sure bits will be disappearing into other technologies.
