This may have already been asked. When jumping to a specific forum from the forums' main page (http://www.javaranch.com that would be cool to jump automatically to the latest page of the thread when it contains multiple pages.

Nobody to argue about that ?
Moreover, after posting at the last page, we are redirected to the first page. Not cool either.

That certainly sounds like a reasonable and useful feature. Let's see if we can get our resident UBB experts to comment on this...

My personal opinion is that jumping automatically to the end of a thread would be, on balance, a bad idea. There are too many people now who don't read a whole discussion before joining in. I understand why you're asking for this, but I don't like the idea.

Now, the thing about going to the first page after replying -- I've also been annoyed by that, and I think it would be a good idea to fix it. My guess is that it wouldn't be hard to change.

I dunno. The only reason a topic appears at all on the main forum page is because it's the most recently-updated topic in a forum. So in that sense it makes a certain logical sense that the link should be associated with the recent update, not the beginning. But I think it's generally a mistake to follow that link and bypass the specific forum page, because you might miss the second-most-recent update, or the third, etc.

It's a little bit tempting to make the topic text on the main forum page not a link at all, to discourage jumping from main page to a single topic. But that's probably too heavy-handed. Or the main forum page could insert numbered links for each page, the way the specific forum pages do. But that starts eating up more space on an already-crowded main page, I think. So I dunno. It seems like all these options are a mixed bag of plusses and minuses, and I don't see a clear advantage of one over another.

Thank you all for your comments.
In fact, I was asking this because, although the main page was showing me that a thread I was writing to had been updated, the same content was shown when I jumped to the page, with my last post. It took me a while to figure out that a new page had been generated, and that I had to click the page number to jump to it. Call me a greenhorn

So what about jumping to the latest page after replying ?

I agree, jumping to the last page after replying would make perfect sense. One of us would just have to track down where that's controlled in the existing code (which we didn't write). It's probably simple, but may be horribly obfuscated. I'll look into it.

Looks like you tracked it down. I noticed that both these features are now available. Cool!

Both these features? I just implemented jumping to the last page after a post. And, closely related, jumping to the same page after an edit. The links on the main forum page still work like they always did, because I didn't see a clear reason to change those.

By the way, I made this change just a couple days after it was requested. You're the first to say anything about it.

Indeed. I definitely was dreaming when i tried this on one of the posts in the Meaningless Drivel forum, earlier during the day.

I didn't notice. Thank you for modifying it.
