Password management and Persistence?

Hi,

As a newbie to J2EE, I've been trying to figure out what the best approach to implement password management and handling persistence of it is.

Well, basically, ID and password (encrypted) password will be stored in DB and those credentials will be used to connect to a different system. Previously, file system was used to store those info, but it was pain to lock and unlock the files whenever they are read/updated in different threads.

I've read some articles on Java Persistence API in J2EE 1.5 which seems to provide some solutions, but I need to implement this in J2EE 1.4

Can someone suggest me the starting point of this?

Thanks,
