What are the aspects you are focusing on? Virus scanning or anti-spam ?

Then you have to consider about both spams and viruses.

For spams you can use Jasen as an anti-spam engine. Try this link
http://www.jasen.org/

To scan for viruses you have to call a virus protection program. Check this link it makes use of Norton command line scanner.
