Disabling smileys by default?

I was wondering whether a person can choose to have smileys disabled by default, rather than checking the 'disable smileys' box for individual posts.

I realize that many people love their smileys, but my personal preference runs to as few icons as possible.

I'm not making a feature suggestion (because I imagine that only a small minority is actually interested in disabling smileys on a large scale!), just wondering whether the feature already exists.

No, you didn't miss anything; it doesn't exist.
