About an year ago, I had a chance to visit Germany ( around 3 months). I have good memories and hope to visit again.
I have seen many (desi) people moving to US/UK on H1(or long term) for job opportunities. I wonder why so few people go for European countries like Germany, france

1 Is it language related (English not being used mostly)?
2 Difficulties in getting work permit?

Any thoughts?? Would like to hear experiences as well..

Thanks,
Shirish

As regards Germany...

Is it language related (English not being used mostly)?

Probably. Although getting by with English presents no problem, few companies would consider hiring someone who wasn't somewhat fluent in German. There's just too much documentation that only exists in German.

Difficulties in getting work permit?

I don't think so. There's a special class of temporary visa for qualified applicants in sought-after professions (kind of like the H1), and they don't ever seem to be close to running out (unlike the H1).

But be aware that there are no sizeable communities of (e.g.) Asians, certainly not outside of large cities. So it's harder to find people that share a common cultural background (which is something many immigrants are looking for).

In my experience, US is much more friendly and easy to get along compared to Europe. Also news about skinheads gangs scares me.

I was thinking of the Green Card program, but that has actually been cancelled in favor of the Immigration Act. All the details are here.
