What are some of the best sources to learn about the low-level implementation of streams (file streams, byte streams, character streams)?

Well, if you want to learn how they're actually implemented, your best bet would be to go to http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/products/java2cs/ , download one of the source code packages, and take a look at exactly how Sun went about implementing these features. You can get all the detail you want this way - enjoy!
