I think that would probably be a lot of overhead, not to mention that there are quite a few folks who pop on here at odd hours due to their jobs or timezone (since it is a board with a global readership).
If folks wanted to do a chat, they could always jump onto IRC or the like - I think it is still around...

This topic has been raised before and I believe we came ot an agreement that the best thing about Javaranch, and the Saloon in particular is that many people do not even need to start a new thread with their questions because so much information is available in a search. This would not be possible if questions were asked and answered in chat.
Pounding at a thick stone wall won't move it, sometimes, you need to step back to see the way around.

Yes but imagine having an interactive lounge in the ranch. It would be 3 times the fun of MD. However moderating something like that would be a disaster and that is probably why I would not be for it. Its much harder to enforce "Be nice" in that situation.
I think the chat can be linked to particular thread, and made public so that the solution will be visible to other people as well
and at the same time, people can get a quick solution to their doubts.
But Bartenders and sheriffs will stop showing their status online after few days as they will be bombard with thousands of questions...
You realize you are posting to a thread that hasn't been active for almost three years?

Yes i know. But any new post on this topic is pointed to this discussion so thought of continuing under the same post.
And i think this can be a good feature if introduced in Ranch.

I am sure if you searched this forum, you would see multiple topics on this [besides the one you pulled up] and they all say "No, not going to do it"
