Windows Environment Variable

Does anyone have sample code for reading and setting a Windows environment variable during application runtime?
I have asked my user to set a particular variable. If the variable is not set, then my code should set the default value for said variable.
Thanks in Advance,
Nathan

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
