A solution we've used previously are Fax-servers. You send them an email in a specific format then extract the phone number and fax details from the email and you pay a per-page rate for the fax.

I can't remember the name of the company providing that service, but it's unlikely to help since it would be unabvisable for you send allof your faxs from Australia...
google provided these:
http://www.google.com/search?q=%2Bfax+%2Bservice+%2Bemail
Good luck
Dave

It should be possible to write a FAX driver using the COMM standard extension to talk to a fax modem on a serial port.
I'm not sure if there is such a driver publicly available.
I'm also not sure how many platforms the COMM extension ahas been ported to.

Well when i was going through the java2d api, i came across the fact that there is a mirror of the api for a printer device, so if you have you fax-modem setup as a printer in window you might be able to swing it with that somehow.
Good Luck,
Micah

Don't shoot the messenger but Exchnage can be setup to send faxes with the right 3rd party tool. Faxination and RightFax are two.
From the user's perspective, one types in a fax number instead of the email address in the TO: property.

RightFax has a Java API. I believe that it only runs on WinNT.
You can also use a service such as EasyLink.

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
