using java can i read windows registry and find the ip of the machine ,and i want to find the softwares installed in the machine along with its version if present

Sorry... You can't do this in Java without some kind of JNI...

Doesn't this seem to be a little platform dependent...

i have done that with the help of c
but it can be done directly i am trying for that

i saw the JNI implementation for reading the registry in Core Java volume 2.
Check that it out it somewhere towards the end of the book.
