They have a search toolbar which (somehow) they get users to install. Once installed, it records every URL you visit and sends it to Alexa's servers (yikes!) Thus Alexa's statistics represent the browsing habits of only that group of people who would install a facocta doodad like this on their computers.
Unfortunately we are stuck with this proprietary solution (is this what vendor lock-in is). Our existing framework (assorted wood and metal poles) does not support a simple migration to another vendor (of colored tape). [ July 15, 2007: Message edited by: David O'Meara ]
