is this a bug in javaranch?

1. Edit your profile to change the display name.
2. Goto any of your replies. You see that your display name has not changed.
3. Now goto [my posts], observe that you still see your old name in last poster column.

is this a bug in javaranch?

Hi Venkatesh,

I think its because of the refreshing rate at server. Not sure exactly to name it but i have also had the same experience.

If you can check later (according to the server's time), i think it will be updated.

It's not a refreshing issue, it is caused by UBB caching some data rather than constantly going looking for it.

But all the new posts you post, comes with your new name!! Seems to be very confusing..sometimes you get confused if you really did change your display name

There are two issues here; one is what David mentions, which can be helped by logging out of the Saloon and logging back in.

The other is the "my posts" page, which is created by a different piece of software, which also caches names, independently of UBB. That cache is flushed at irregular intervals because it takes a few hours to rebuild. I'll try to get it done this weekend, so that next week the new name should be reflected everywhere.

For the record: Ulf wrote the 'my posts' stuff and it rocks.

This is what i was intended to say as "refreshing rate" David. As Ulf said, i was able to see my changed name after logging out and logging in again.

My experienced with the problem what Venktesh mentioned:

If after you changed your display name, there is any new post added to that
thread, your display name will be modified to that thread.

As I remember, if meanwhile there is any edit in any of the post of that
thread, there is not effect in your display name, I mean it is same as It was,
without any update.

What do you say about that guys?

That's not what I observe. Any new post or edit (or delete) to a thread causes the whole thread to be refreshed, which updates the display names. The only exceptions to this are (a) names in "edited by" notes are not updated, and (b) names on the main forum page and individual forum pages (where it lists the thread starter and last poster) are not updated. because, again, we don't want the system to keep looking up info on every single person to see if it's changed. That takes too much time.

i don't think the exact details are all that interesting, and we don't really need everyone to try to report to us on exactly how it works. Some information gets cached. Therefore you will sometimes see outdated information. This is normal, and will not be changing anytime soon. Detailed reports on this behavior are not necessary. Thank you.

The index has been re-created, so that right now all names should be current on the "my posts" page. As soon as it's changed, though, the page will once again be out of sync.
