I need to do a lot of pattern matching, parsing etc. for a certain high speed application. Which is the best api in java to do this (note that i need real good performance). I heard regular expr. is really fast, so thought about the java.util.regex package... but the prblem is i cant use 1.4 version. so is that package available for download, and can b used with 1.3? Please help.

Check out the Jakarta Regexp project.
I can't speak to its performance characteristics, though I have not found any performance problems while using it in my own code.
hth,

Have you looked at the new java.util.regex package in JDK1.4? It offers pretty good utilities and because it is a part of the core language, might offer you better performance too.
Check it out!

Hi Ajith,
Yes i was talkin about java.util.regex. But the problem is, I shdnt use java 1.4 but only 1.3. Is there a separate download for that package alone, so that it can be used with 1.3.
Hi Bear, Im still looking into the link you sent. Thanks for that.

Not for the actual java.util.regex classes - but there are similar packages such as the one Bear linked to. Another is Jakarta ORO. I've no idea which is better, but both have been used successfully by a lot of people I think.
