Getting length(no of bytes) of Dom document which is in memory

Hi
I am using JDK1.4.
I am constructing a DOM document from scratch .
How can i find the number of bytes of that document
I tried

  
Documentdoc
doc.toString().getBytes().length

this returns 17
also i tried

 
doc.getDocumentElement().toString().getBytes().length
 

None of this is working...
How can i get the number of bytes of a DOM document..

    {
            try
            {
            String nodeString;
            TransformerFactory tFactory = TransformerFactory.newInstance();
            Transformer transformer = tFactory.newTransformer();
            //transformer.setOutputProperty("omit-xml-declaration", "yes");
            StringWriter sw = new StringWriter();
            StreamResult result = new StreamResult(sw);
            DOMSource source = new DOMSource( doc );
            transformer.transform( source, result );
            nodeString = sw.getBuffer().toString();
            System.out.println("Length..."+nodeString.getBytes().length);
            return nodeString;
            }
            catch(Exception e)
            {
                e.printStackTrace();
                return null;
            }
   
    }
