remote access

I have an XML file on a separate machine and I want to access (lookup and update using JDOM) it from several different machines. What is the tried and trusted way to do this nowadays? I've used RMI before but is this still the best way to do things? Is there a recommended way using sockets?
Thanks for any advice.
Paul
