Hi Im trying to develop a middle tier in Java that VB can access from a GUI. The idea is to be able to write a GUI in any language which can integrate easily with Java. Can anyone give me advice? thanks

I would strongly urge you to consider why you want to do this in the first place. I think you may be making the solution much more complex than it has to be. Unless there are compelling business reasons in your particular case, this type of architecture is unnecessary for most projects. That said, your best bet would be to write all external interfaces of you middle tier using Web Services. This should give you the interoperability that you are looking for. However, this flexibility comes with a piece both in terms productivity and performance. Only you can decide if the cost is worth the benefits for your project, in the majority of my experiences I would say it is not. [ May 22, 2003: Message edited by: Chris Mathews ]

Hi Chris well the idea that the business tier can interact with any GUI type is partly because some of our customers specify a VB front end according to the boss - also we have more people that understand vb so if we can quickly create a RAD application built on top of our business layer then we dont necessarily have to train people in JAVA you mention web services .... do you mean using xml as a service layer between the middle & front layers? thanks

you can use cobra to communicate between them. Only if you're Indian and have a flute. Otherwise it gets very dangerous.
By the way Don, I was a little concerned about you when I heard about the earthquake in Japan. Are you OK?

I agree. Here's the link: http://ej-technologies/jprofiler - if it wasn't for jprofiler, we would need to
run our stuff on 16 servers instead of 3.
