barcode scanner Interface

Hi friends,
How can I Interface a direcly connected bar code scanner with my java application. I want to read the barcode and get the result string to my application variable. Please help me, Urgent.

what api's does your barcode scanner vendor provide ?

Been a while since i used one of these.
Depends on the model.
We used to have one that was looped into the connection
between Computer and Keyboard and simply stuffed the characters it
recognized into the Keyboard datastream.
That would be easy, since it's exactly the same thing as reading
keyboard input.
I remember a second type that connected to the serial port, you might
wanna check the actual Hardware to find out what interface you're
confonted with.

I need a scanner which works in the same way of a keyboard. Whatever I scan should be displayed on the currently focused application. The h/w vendor didnt give any APIs for connectivity with JAVA. And my requirement is specific to my application.
Please let me know how to access the scanner output.
