Hardware Interfacing in Java

Respected Group Members,
Is it possible to do hardware interfacing through java,I mean to say that lets suppose I have 3 LED(Light Emitting Diodes) and I want to control them through parallel ports than does java provides some methods or are there any specific API's avaliable for interfacing through parallel ports,serial ports and other hardware devices.In C language we have outportb() function for interfacing to parallel ports are any such of these available in Java.

Round these parts, posting the same question in multiple forums is bad practice. It can make it rather difficult to follow a conversation, plus folks spend time saying things that were just said.
