Second, using the generally accepted definition, the state of an object is fully characterized by the collected values of its member variables.

Hm, just to muddy things up, and maybe to make Mr. Green think a little, I'm not sure what "values of the member variables" means ... does that include the states of the objects referenced by the member variables?
