I need to create reports using java. The report has to contain both text and Charts (the chart numbers come from a text file).

1. What could be the right format of the output file (pdf, Excel, ...)
2. is there any freeware package I can use to do so (or does java supports this withoud the need of other packages)?

Please take note that the report (or reports) should be saved and not just displayed on the screen.

Try jasperReports for report generation. JFreeChart for chart(bar/pie/...) generation.
Ireport open source tool is also there for report and chart generation.

Hi,
U can make export option in report i.e u can generate report in different format like excel, text,PDF. For generating PDF report u can take help of PDFGenerator.jar, just make certain changes according to ur need in jar. N once u go through PDFGenerator code u can easily write code for excel n text.
