If you specifically want to work in the telecom domain then why not learn J2ME in addition to J2EE + Java. If you are flexible to work in any domain then good knowledge of Java and J2EE should be fine.

-- Concentrate on getting your CV right
-- Learn the core concepts relating to Java/J2EE
-- Get hands on experience in Java by using popular and sought after frameworks/technologies like JSF, Spring, Hibernate. You can work on tutorials/sample projects.
