Dos has a 8.3-filename restriction.

So you could only run java from .jar-Files, and not compile your .java - files to .class.

But I don't know, whether there is a java for dos.

Filenames are the least of your worries!

None of the major JVM vendors support DOS, but there are a few "tiny JVM" implementations that claim to work on DOS. Here's one. I can't vouch for the quality of this or any other DOS JVM.

But just to be perfectly clear: Sun's Windows JVM cannot run on DOS alone.
