In the US (which I assume you're referring to since the rticle was written by a guy in the US), absolutely.

Here's a comment I got from a friend this morning in an email, "everyone I've talked to in the tech industry say it's really hard to find good people."

"It's really hard to find good people." is one of those statements that causes heated debates to break out on places like Slashdot, where inevitably the response will be "OF COURSE it's hard to find good people - when you want them to do 3 people's jobs, have 5 years experience in a 3-year old product, work them 75-hour weeks and be on call and pay them $18K". Followed by an observation that hiring personnel seem to think Sturgeon's Law shouldn't be required to apply to IT.

A more valid question is - how is labor availability in comparison to other times? Better, worse? And are they making concessions appropriate to high-demand situations? Under the right circumstances, I'm available, but last time I checked, not many were willing to be flexible enough to attract me.

I disagree. I did a lot of hiring in 2003/2004 in the Boston area and had no problem finding good people then (and I'd like to think I wasn't making unrealistic expectations).

Mark just out of interest, in your hiring process what type of mix do you look for in tems of technical skills versus soft skills?

Especially:

-- excellent technical skills/okay soft skills : potential hire/nohire
-- excellent soft skills/okay technical skills : potential hire/nohire

Do you classify analytical, problem solving & domain skills as soft skills?

Mark does this imply that there are more positions opening up with fewer qualified people (than in 2003/2004) , or the ppl that you get these days dont have great skills in java???

Arulk, that's a bit off topic for this thread. I can answer it in another more appropriate thread.

It doesn't imply either. It does imply that it is not always hard to find good people (IMHO) despite the claim made by the prototypical quote Tim referenced.

That said, I do think he's right that it's really all much more meaningful to ask on a relative basis.

From my limited experience in Sydney, if I interview 6-8 people likely to find 1-2 technically competent.
