I got a Offer from one of the top best company.However they gave a letter which only says the date of joining. However the compensation details are given as a separate sheet (which is not a letter head paper)....

However the company is very genuine and they are the best in the IT market.I was wondering is that is a normal things ....

In India mostly you will get offer letter as first step so that you can proceed with resignation formalities with your present employer. Later you will receive the appointment letter with complete details including salary break up. Probably you can ask the HR that when can you expect the appointment letter.

most of the companies will give you your compensation details only in letter head paper...

What if they say different compensation details when you are going to join ?

I'm curious: Are those letters all the (prospective) employee has? Is there no contract that gets signed by both sides, and which spells out all the details of employment? And if there's no contract, do those letters constitute evidence in a court of law (in case it ever comes to that)?

Hardly there is any contract. There are even bizarre situations, employer collecting the certificates and testimonials from employee at the time of joining (yes the originals) for verification and not returning them back, kind of "virtual hold" on employee.

Yes the offer letter does specify the terms and conditions of employment. HR will hand over the letter and ask for signed copy on the spot. The candidate will have to sign there itself without even reading. some companies do give time to read and sign. The salary of course would have been conveyed before

You should never sign anything without reading it first. If the company won't give you time, i'm not sure i'd want to work for them.

May sound funny fred but companies are better than indian court of law.
