I think that largely depends on what other software background you might have. My firm currently has an Oracle DBA quite successfully learning C#, so switching from t-sql to Java can't be all that impossible. I'd say start with Head First Java and work from there.

Certification will only help to short list your resume for the interview. Its your java skills which will help you to materialize that opportunity.

Practice and do small projects. Download working examples and tweak them to understand how things are working.

(Success at any tech JOB)==(Read <---> Practice)

Hope you understand the above formula

All the best !!!

It won't hurt to get one done, but don't get obsessed with it. Try to get hands on experience in sought after technologies/frameworks by contributing to opensource projects, working self-taught projects, etc.

2.6 years?
I always don't understand when people say the experience in decimal numbers. Was that supposed to be 2 years and 6 months or it is ~ 2 years 7 months and 6 days?
