GUI on Linux

Is it really possible to construt a GUI in JAVA for ANY platform? I designed a GUI in Windows and when I ran it in Linux's KDE, things didn't line up properly. Granted I used a Null layout, but the fonts were even all different. Is that because Windows and KDE default to two seperate fonts? Will specifiying one font correct that?
Any pointers would be appreciated.
Thanks
