Hi! I have this problem trying to play the rule roundup game. Tha page loads but then the game doesn't start and the message "Gettin' yer horse ready..." doesn't go away. I've updated my JRE to 1.6.0 build 1.6.0_03-b05. I'm running win xp essential edition and mozilla firefox 18.104.22.168 Thanks a lot! [ November 07, 2007: Message edited by: Gerardo Pose ]
Yes! I didn't notice the messages before. This is what the java console says:
HTTP: java.security.AccessControlException: access denied (java.net.SocketPermission 22.214.171.124 resolve) at java.security.AccessControlContext.checkPermission(Unknown Source) at java.security.AccessController.checkPermission(Unknown Source) at java.lang.SecurityManager.checkPermission(Unknown Source) at java.lang.SecurityManager.checkConnect(Unknown Source) at sun.net.www.http.HttpClient.New(Unknown Source) at sun.net.www.http.HttpClient.New(Unknown Source) at sun.net.www.protocol.http.HttpURLConnection.getNewHttpClient(Unknown Source) at sun.net.www.protocol.http.HttpURLConnection.plainConnect(Unknown Source) at sun.net.www.protocol.http.HttpURLConnection.connect(Unknown Source) at sun.net.www.protocol.http.HttpURLConnection.getOutputStream(Unknown Source) at com.javaranch.common.HTTP.sendObject(HTTP.java:82) at com.javaranch.common.HTTP.sendE(HTTP.java:118) at com.javaranch.common.HTTP.send(HTTP.java:136) at com.javaranch.roundup.applets.QuizApplet.createPanels(QuizApplet.java:120) at com.javaranch.roundup.applets.QuizApplet.access$000(QuizApplet.java:24) at com.javaranch.roundup.applets.QuizApplet$MakePanels.run(QuizApplet.java:38) Exception in thread "Thread-9" java.lang.RuntimeException: could not load StartData at com.javaranch.roundup.applets.QuizApplet.createPanels(QuizApplet.java:123) at com.javaranch.roundup.applets.QuizApplet.access$000(QuizApplet.java:24) at com.javaranch.roundup.applets.QuizApplet$MakePanels.run(QuizApplet.java:38)
Well, applets are supposed to be allowed to contact the server they are downloaded from, which is what this applet is doing (126.96.36.199 is our server) and being blocked. Did you download the applet and try to run it locally, or did you find it somewhere else besides on the JavaRanch site? Have you made some change to your machine's configuration to prohibit all network connections by applets?
Hmmmm not that I remember. Java is running with it's default configuration and I didn't change anything in firefox. Before I updated my JRE I was able to play the game. I don't know if that's causing the problem .

What do you mean by "downloaded the script"? What is "the script"?
