Does Swing Need A Candy Coating?

I've been reading a lot of articles and blogs lately where people are talking about the problems with Swing. One of the points that keeps popping up is that Swing needs a layer on top of it. A Framework is the first tech word that comes to mind, although I really don't think a framework is what is being discussed.

I think what developers are wanting is components that already do what developers are having to hand code on a daily basis. For example the TreeTable. A TreeTable is something that a lot of developers would like to use in an application but the complexity of coding such a component is often too much. Especially for intermediate Swing developers like myself.

So what do all you other Swing enthusiast think? Does swing need a candy coating to make it more usable and maybe more popular to developers? What else can be done? Who should take the initiative if this is what it needs?

JDIC looks promising. Maybe those developers should tackle the issue of making Swing easier to use. Lets hear some thoughts.

P.S. - Lets keep the "Swing is slow" debate at a minimum as the topic of this thread should not really consider that. Thanks.

Umm, to some extent. A lot of the JGoodies components are a bit too developed IMO.
