extending classes with inner classes

Not sure if this belongs here or in intermediate Java...

I have a class RunPanel which extends JPanel. It contains several inner classes for a TableModel etc. In fact, the inner class tableModel contains it's own inner class ColumnData.

What I want to do is extend RunPanel with two descendants. These descendants will need to over-ride methods in the inner classes of RunPanel and its inner classes ColumnData.

How should this be done? My RunPanel class seems fine, it's just hard to extend. do I have to break out the inner classes into classes of their own?
