Swing : refreshing panels

Hi Guys : I have a problem where
a Jpanel inside another JPanel
must change - but the changed components
are not shown until either the inner panel is clicked, or the window is resized.

This is a really weird bug --- i though that nested jpanels were essentially autonomous components, i.e. if they change, than there is no need to notify the parent programatically... am I wrong ?
