How to fade an image?

When a user prints from my application, I want to use one of my images as a watermark on the printed page.

To do this, I need to fade the image (i.e., make the colours less bold). Does anyone know how I can do this (Java 1.1)??

Any sample code would go down well!

You can use the free software called ImageJ

That should allow the effect with the smoothing algorithims
