In my experience I found Java Servlet Programming by Jason Hunter extremely useful, and easy going for a relative beginner.

Pounding at a thick stone wall won't move it, sometimes, you need to step back to see the way around.

I used this book too, until I realised it's a bit outdated.. the problem was that I was new to servlets so I didn't realise it was 'out of date'.
I noticed at that he (Jason Hunter) is writing the Second Version due out soon.
I'm waiting for that one. For now I stick ot the 'specs' and this board for my info.
